Occasionally shingles will blow off during a storm. This is typically due to improper installation or poor-quality shingles. If shingles are nailed above the nail line and miss the top of the shingle below this can cause them to slip or blow off. Shingles have a line of tar installed by the manufacturer that heats up in the sun after installation to seal them together. A poor quality of tar or a light tar line can cause this seal to be broken as the roof ages. This allows the wind to lift the shingle tabs and either break them off or blow them off completely.
While it is almost impossible to match the shingle color of an old roof exactly a few missing shingles can easily be replaced. Unfortunately, if you are starting to have shingles blow off, this is a sign that your roof is nearing the end of its life and may need to be replace in the next few years.
